Most people know that it is recommended to have your carpets cleaned at least once a year. Because carpet cleaning is such a regular event, people wonder: should I just clean them myself or hire a professional?
In order to answer this question we’ve done some research. We’ve studied the science behind removing stains from carpet and have gathered some interesting results. Here is what we found:
Do It Yourself?
In order to clean your carpets by yourself, you will need to rent a steam cleaning machine. What exactly does a steam cleaner do? Well to begin, steam cleaners blast the carpet with water and detergent. The machine will then rinse and vacuum up the moisture, which you know is not very effective if you have ever tried to vacuum water. Steam cleaners end up using lots of water, causing the carpets to stay damp for a long time, potentially leading to the growth of harmful mildew.
In addition, soap residue is not rinsed thoroughly from your carpet. This left-behind soap attracts dirt, resulting in carpets that need to be cleaned yet again. Not what you were hoping for!
And for those who thought doing it yourself would be cheap, think again. Not only will you have to rent the machine, you will have to supply the cleaning solutions as well! It will also cost you a lot of time and labor - picking up & returning the machine, moving the furniture, actually cleaning the carpets, and setting up fans to dry the carpets. All that time and money for carpets that probably won’t get as clean as you’d like.
The Advantage of Professional Cleaning
Unlike steam cleaners, Chem-Dry uses the Power of Carbonation to naturally and gently lift stains to the surface with millions of carbonated bubbles. This process requires ⅕ the amount of water as steam cleaning, leaves behind virtually no residue, and dries in just a few hours.
There is a certain temperature of water that is most effective for cleaning carpets. While DIY Steam Cleaners are not able to reach this water temperature, the professionals have much more powerful machines that use hotter water and better vacuums.
So is it worth calling the professionals and spending the money? Yes! It may cost more money in the beginning, but in the long run you will be saving time, stress, and your carpets! We at Chem-Dry have been doing this for years and we have the process and techniques mastered.
If you finish cleaning your carpets and they are more than ‘slightly damp’, they are too wet! Using too weak of a machine will often leave carpets soggy and will take as long as 1-2 days to fully dry. Chem-Dry’s Hot Carbonation Extraction method dries in just a few hours!
You might be able to get the little stains out yourself (especially with the help of Chem-Dry), but deeper stains and odors will need to be taken care of by a professional, especially if there is pet urine and odor in your carpet.
